The Joint Terrain — Inflammation, the Gut-Joint Axis and the Architecture of Movement

The Acid-Alkaline Terrain
Traditional herbal medicine has long recognised the relationship between an acid-forming dietary terrain and inflammatory joint conditions — particularly gout and osteoarthritis. The modern diet, high in refined carbohydrates, animal protein, and inflammatory fats, creates a metabolic acid load that the body manages partly through the buffering capacity of bone mineral. The Herbal Approach
Harpagophytum procumbens (devil's claw) is among the most well-evidenced herbal anti-inflammatories for joint pain — specifically indicated for osteoarthritis and lower back pain, with a quality of evidence that compares favourably with NSAIDs without the gastric and cardiovascular risks. Boswellia serrata provides potent anti-inflammatory action through 5-lipoxygenase inhibition, particularly effective in inflammatory arthritis. Curcuma longa (turmeric) is broadly anti-inflammatory and supports the gut terrain simultaneously.
For gout specifically, Apium graveolens (celery seed) is a reliable uricosuric herb — supporting the clearance of uric acid through the kidneys — alongside significant dietary intervention. Urtica dioica (stinging nettle) has both anti-inflammatory and mineral-rich nourishing properties, and a particular affinity for the kind of joint pain that has an inflammatory and eliminatory dimension.
For bone health and the prevention of osteoporosis, the mineral-rich herbs — Urtica dioica, Equisetum arvense (horsetail), Medicago sativa (alfalfa) — provide the silica, calcium, and mineral cofactors that support bone architecture, alongside dietary and lifestyle measures.
